Violaceae is a family of flowering plants, consisting of about 1000 species in about 25 genera. Viola philippica is a traditional Chinese medicine used for detoxification and reducing swelling. Plants from Violaceae produce cyclotides, peptides characterized by a circular peptide backbone and a cystine knot. The natural function of cyclotides is believed to be in host defense.
